Pins and Needles

Last week, I wrote about Paul Revere’s famous ride.  He spread the word that “The British are coming!  The British are coming!”  This week, more than two centuries later, on the other side of the pond, the British are saying “The Obamas are coming!  The Obamas are coming!”  But I digress.

On the Master Plan front this week, it’s “The Consultants’ Draft Phase I Report is Coming!  The Consultants’ Draft Phase I Report is Coming!”  It doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as easily as the others, and I doubt that Longfellow would have devoted an iota of ink to hyping it, but those of us involved with this process on a daily basis are all on pins and needles in anxious anticipation of its arrival on our “shores” next week.

There are two important things to remember as you and we read this report.  First, this report will not be filled with answers to the problems of the campus.  This report will be an organized compendium of the issues that confront, and oft-times confound, our campus, as well as the opportunities where the consultants collectively believe improvements can be made.  The development of the various potential solutions to these issues and opportunities will be the task of the final two phases of the planning process.

Secondly, this is a DRAFT Phase I report, not a FINAL Phase I report.  The campus in all of its many facets will have several weeks to comment on the draft.  It will be posted on the website (www.uic.edu/master_plan).  The standing Campus Master Plan committees will discuss it in great detail.  And there will be two more Town Hall meetings for input from other campus constituencies.  (See below.)

The report will not arrive by horseback or on some ship flying the colors of a foreign land.  No –  it will be delivered in person to the Executive Committee on Monday and then electronically via email probably flying the colors of a .pdf format.  But it will arrive and it needs to be studied and commented on so it can be revised to reflect an accurate picture of current conditions and to form a solid foundation for the recommendations to come.

Until next Friday…
